Abstract

The objectives of this research are: I) to find out the most frequently occurred translation procedure in James farmer Jr's utterances of The Great Debaters movie and: 2) to describe the translation quality of James farmer Jr's utterances in The Great Debaters movie. The researcher focused on the theory proposed by Ncwmark (1988) and Nababan (2012) in analyzing the data. Then, the data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative method. The sources of the data were the original English script or dialogue from the movie and Indonesian subtitle which was written by Adel Various. The documentation method was used to collect the data from the movie. The result of analysis subtitling procedures shows that there were twelve procedures used in the movie subtitle based on Newmark theory, namely Transference. Naturalization. Cultural Equivalent Functional Equivalent. Synonym. Shift or Transposition. Modulation. Compensation. Paraphrase. Combination of Several Procedures. Reduction and Expansion, and the most occurred translation procedure was Literal Translation. Then, the result of' translation quality assessment shows that the subtitle of The Great Debaters movie was Accurate. Acceptable, and Readable.
