Abstract

The aims of this research is to analyze what kind of speech styles used by male and female teacher at Poso English Course and to find out what is the reason of them in using the particular speech styles. This research use descriptive qualitative method and use recording, interview and observation in the form of field note to collect the data. In order to analyze the data, the researcher use a Theory speech style from Baxter in Rifqi (2017), which is male speech style; matter of fact, assertive, aggressive, use of humor, ego-enhancing, and goal-directed. While female speech style; personal, compliant, polite, co-operative, and process oriented. In this research, the researcher found that the male teacher use all of the male speech styles' features and dominantly performed Matter of Fact feature that is informative. The reason why the male teacher mostly used this speech style because he handle the beginning classes, which is the new student of that course place. These new students still need information from the course place and are also lacking in English knowledge. Therefore the male teacher still talks a lot about information on what materials they will learn in their lessons, that is teaching the important things, which is the matter of fact. Meanwhile the female teacher also apply all of the female speech style and mostly use co-operative features. She dominantly performed this speech style because she wanted to build their trust to her when teaching, which is she wants to build good cooporate and relation with the students.
