Abstract

The research aims are to identify expressive illocutionary acts and to analyze the meaning of expressive illocutionary acts found in “Mona Lisa Smile Film”. This research is descriptive qualitative that uses a film and its script which identified by using the theory from Searle (1996) which was developed by Duranti (1997) and analyzed by using the theory SPEAKING model by Dell Hymes (1974). The result of this research shows that the expressive illocutionary acts which found in Mona Lisa Smile Film are complimenting, thanking, greeting, deplore, congratulating, condoling, complaining, praise, and boasting. The meaning of expressive illocutionary acts which found in this research has various meaning depend on the context of conversation between Katherine Watson and her students that dominant in learning activity which happened in the classroom, Joe’s gallery, cafe, art room, special room, and Joan’s house.
