Abstract

The aims of this study are to describe the model of STAD strategy developed to increase the students' ability in reading comprehension skills and the students' achievement in reading comprehension through STAD strategy. This classroom action research comprises three cycles, and each cycle consisting of four phases, i.e. planning, implementation, observation, and reflection which are adopted from Kemmis and Mc Taggart's action research model. The subjects of the study were the second year students of SMP Alkhairaat Ampana of 2016/2017 academic year of semester 1, which consisted often male and eight female. The instrument used in this study consisted of a test (quizz), a cassette recorder, observation sheets, and fieldnotes or journals. The research findings are as follows: 1) the model of STAD strategy developed contains four major stages, namely organizing the groups, designing the seating arrangement, presenting the reading materials, adminstering the quizz and giving rewards, 2) The application of STAD strategy can increase the students' ability in comprehending the text in which the students have dramatic channge seen from their improvement of score result from cycle 1 to cycle 3 where the students mean score and the percentation of classical successful are 53.89 of mean score with 22.22 % of classical succesful (privious Test), 62.78 with 50 % of classical successful (cycle 1), 70 with 72.22 % of classical successful (cycle 2), and 75.56 with 94.44 % of classical successful (cycle 3), 3) this strategy can encourage the students from different abilities and sexes to work together toward a common goal (positive interdependece), to raise their self-confidence, and grow good social interaction among teammates.
