Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out the factors affecting students' problems in writing paragraph. This type of research was qualitative. The subject of the research was eight semester students of English Education Study Program of Sintuwu Maroso University amounting to 30 students. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. The research findings Identiiy four factors affecting students problems in writing paragraph. First, psychological factors consisting of self-esteem, anxiety, risk taking, and motivation. Second, sociocultural factors covering social and cultural distance in the language classroom. Third, linguistic factors consisting of addition, omission, grammar, and phonology. Fourth, cognitive factors consist of lack of reading, first language influence, organizing problem, content problem, lack of motivation, and punctuation. Based on the research result, it was found that almost of eighth semester students had problems in writing paragraph because they were affected by these four factors.
